Ajax is a small town in the Durham Region of Southern Ontario, Canada, located in the eastern part of the Greater Toronto Area.
The town is named after HMS Ajax, a Royal Navy cruiser that served in World War II. It is approximately 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario and is bordered by the City of Pickering to the west and north, and the Town of Whitby to the east.
According to the 2011 National Household Survey, total population was 109,600 if which 95.3% of residents are Canadian citizens, and about 7.6% of residents are recent immigrants (from 2001 to 2011). The racial make up of Ajax is: White (52.5%), Black (16%), South Asian (13.8%), Southeast & East Asian (7.8%), West Asian & Arab (2.7%), Latin American (1%), and Aboriginal (1.7%). 2% of the population is multiracial, and the last 2.6% belong to another group.
Ajax has the highest Black population percentage of any major Canadian city (population above 100,000). With new construction at an all time high this demography has shifted quite a bit.
